CONO Cheesemakers

Noord-Holland
A big player!

CONO Cheesemakers is a well-known name in the cheese world. This cooperative was founded in 1901 by a group of dairy farmers from North Holland. Today, they are leaders in animal welfare and sustainability. Our Stompetoren cheeses are made by CONO Cheesemakers. The aging process takes place in our own cheese warehouse, a true craft.

How does CONO Cheesemakers make its production sustainable?

We're proud that the CONO cheese factory is considered one of the "greenest cheese factories in the world." Throughout the entire supply chain, they work with care for people, animals, and the environment. This diagram shows how they do this.

A good example of this is the CONO stable. It features, among other things:

  • A low-emission floor; less ammonia and methane keeps the air cleaner
  • A mono-digester; this uses fresh manure to generate heat and electricity.
  • Wooden trusses and roof from reforestation projects; prevents radiation and increases comfort.
  • Soft lying areas, ample drinking facilities and carbon brushes ensure 'cow comfort'.

The CONO stable is a great example of this organization's commitment to sustainability. Want to learn more about CONO Cheesemakers' projects and climate ambitions? Read more

Kees Remijn tells…

"There was one customer who always specifically asked for CONO cheese. So, I've been buying CONO cheese ever since," says Kees Remijn. When Kees later asks for a label for the cheese, a salesperson from CONO Cheesemakers has a solution. This was the beginning of Stompetorenkaas.
