Cheese farm De Gelder

Tijnje

It all began in 1962, when Hans-Peter Vogel's grandparents honeymooned in Friesland. They then moved from Gelderland to Friesland (hence the name "De Gelder") and started a small dairy farm with 16 cows. The farm now has 350 cows and is known for its Tynjetaler and Gruttepier.

History of the Tynjetaler

Tynjetaler is one of the farm's most famous cheeses. It all began with a failed batch. Throwing away the cheese wasn't an option, so these cheeses were simply sold under the name "Farmers' Holey Cheese." But people loved the cheese so much that they kept coming back. The family then developed a recipe, and that became the bestseller we all know today.

Hans-Peter tells

What I find so special about our company is the people. Family or not, we all share the same passion for cheese. It's wonderful to see how that hard work was rewarded in 2023 with the Cum Laude Award for our Gruttepier. At the same time, we keep it fun by constantly trying new things and innovating. Sometimes with success, sometimes not. That's what makes it so enjoyable!

Long, long ago

This collaboration dates back to when the Emst family started making cheese. That was sometime after they moved from Gelderland to Friesland. Did you know that's where the farm's name comes from?

"They had to overcome many obstacles to buy the farm back then. They secured a beautiful spot, with no other farm in sight. In this beautiful location, they make the finest cheeses," says Kees Remijn.
